Biltong and Farmstalls

Much like on Route 66, prior to the days of interstate highways and big service centres, when travelers found food and gas at roadside stands, in South Africa you stop at the farmstall. These little snippets of nostalgia are a step back in time and a delight to visit. Farmstalls are generally family-run businesses set up to sell a variety of goods made on the farm.

Often you’ll find homemade preserves, jams, fruit, biltong (South Africa’s version of jerky), along with a variety of meat pies. Some are small and quaint, while others large and known throughout the country. No matter the size, each is unique, depending on the local farming, crafts, and granny’s recipes, making each stop it’s own taste exploration.

There may also be a braai (BBQ) set up where you can grab delicious roosterkoek sandwiches or bobotie and a gingerbeer. Save room for the lemon meringue pie! There is no need to rush back to the car. Round back you’ll likely find picnic tables to enjoy your finds and a safe place for the kids to run around. As you drive around South Africa don’t miss these occasionally weird, wonderful opportunities to strike up a conversation and taste the marmalade.
